Sonnet to Sleep
The taste of death has never been so sweet
The river Styx flows somewhere in my soul
An orchard grows there thriving on the heat
I taste the fruit and cannot be made whole
Both good and evil fill my dreams at night
As conscious thought gives way to restless sleep
My spirit wanders; mental kingdoms fight
Reality’s warriors begin to weep
This battle rages inside of my brain
My spirit searches for the secret prize
The battle screams and I can feel the pain
It fades and I see life through open eyes
Forgotten realms of life and death and love
They fade away to dreamlands high above
